Good morning, University Watchers….

IPL Uniform Preview

Twenty20 cricket is a sport that readers of Uni Watch over the previous seven years should be familiar with. We covered the inaugural T20 league in 2017 (apologies, the photographs have succumbed to link rot), and the most recent season was covered in 2018. We present to you now the Indian Premier League, the most watched cricket league globally.

The seventeenth season of the Indian Premier League began last Friday and ends on May 26, the same day Paul Lukas concludes his career with Uni Watch. A carnival of white cricket balls soaring into the stands, vibrant sublimated (and occasionally gaudy) uniforms, and, regrettably, an abundance of uniform advertisements characterize those days and the ones in between.

The coveted and incredibly uncommon “I’d buy that at full price” will not obtain my maximum grade due to the deluge of adverts. Actually, not one of them will receive the endorsement “I’d buy that at a discount.” Will any of them receive a “I’d wear that” at the very least? As we get started, let’s find out (in alphabetical order)…Although I won’t be ranking them, I will rate them.

1. Chennai Super Kings

That is a full banana bunch of yellow, just like their progeny, the Texas Super Kings of Major League Cricket. Chennai has blue striping, whereas Texas has red. Take note of the red lion that is sublimated at the jersey’s bottom. There will be some huge cats in that region on a few teams. Remember the advertisements on the pants? This closeup makes it easier to notice that they are not in the same locations for every player. For whatever reason, the Super Kings aren’t the only team in the league that does this.

Rating: “I suppose I would wear that”if *me* was the billboard for the advertising, or if it was free.

2. Delhi Capitals

As you may have seen by now, each number has a little IPL logo at the bottom in addition to the regular typeface for names and numbers. Cricket and soccer fans throughout the world are accustomed to that idea. At the bottom of the shirt, another large cat. A lovely city map may be seen behind the tiger, and it appears more clearly here. I adore the combination of red and royal-ish blue, how the sleeves contrast with the jersey’s body, and the sublimation is well done.

Grade: Unquestionably “I would put that on.”

3. Gujurat Titans

This is the closest thing to minimalism you’ll find in the IPL! Speaking of which, I recently finished covering a season of college football during which time all of these outfits were in style, and I definitely would rank them all higher than you would because of how yawn-inducingly simple and bland they were. They’re not boring, at least! All in all, not much to see here save a few gold lightning bolts on a dark blue uniform with an oddball angular wave design all around.

Rating: “I’d wear that,” just like in Chennai, if you pay me.

4. Kolkata Knight Riders

While I’m far away, it seems like a lot more polished version of what I wear to clean up: a sweatshirt covered in paint and a pair of trousers stained with bleach. While that may seem insulting, that isn’t the case. The side design extends up to the shoulders, and I appreciate the geometric gold motifs. Maybe they will appear even better than the current LA Knight Riders of the MLC. While I’m tempted to get a Uni Watch membership card in that style for the last Purple Amnesty Day, I’m not sure whether I would buy that!

Score: *jeans and* pants †“I’d wear that”

5. Lucknow Super Giants

These seem like really comfy jammies. Once more, not in jest. Phil is now scratching his brain, trying to figure out why he likes them but not tie-dye. This is due to the geometric design present here as opposed to the haphazard color swirl that would make me queasy. The subtle orange striped swirl on the blue uniform is appealing to me. I’m not too fond of the blue striping that reflects light. Just like with our next team, I’m relieved they didn’t make the stats reflect that.

“I’d wear that” to bed is the rating.

6. Mumbai Indians

In contrast to its progeny, MLC’s MI New York, these units aren’t the poorest in the league. This is due to the fact that they are not the only ones that utilize reflecting gold numerals, which may occasionally be seen well and other times not at all. The very subtly sublimated M’s are wonderful, and I adore the color. The luminous shoulder and side stripes, along with the numbers, make this outfit unsalvageable.

“You couldn’t pay me to wear that,” was the rating.

7. Punjab Kings

Et tu, Punjab? What’s up with the trend of bright, shimmering numbers? That ruins an otherwise good design, along with the advertisement on the right shoulder that resembles a “Hello, my name is _____” sticker. I find the angled blue and gold side stripes to be functional, and I kind of enjoy the flaming honeycomb sublimation. They wear dark blue on top of red, for their final non-monochromatic outfit. It’s unfortunate that they chose not to paint the numbers white, but I suppose their main concern is what the fans would purchase rather than what looks beautiful on the field.

“It is not something I can wear.”

8. Rajasthan Royals

The primary jersey advertisement, for once, accurately depicts the jersey. Bright pink and white “dots” together make for a really striking combination. When you enlarge, you can truly see a pattern made up of many forms. It’s a good thing they didn’t go all pink, even if there are rumors that they might go mono for one game. In particular, while the Royals are batting, the blue pants and sleeves look fantastic against the pink blouse.

Given that Jaipur, the team’s home field, has long been referred to as India’s Pink City, what began as a one-game cancer awareness homage a few years ago has grown into an annual event. Moreover, the pants have intriguing stripes with dashes and upward-pointing “arrowheads.” Phil constantly urging more professional teams to use pink as a regular color scheme, so this may be the one occasion where we agree today.

Rating: “I’d wear that, for sure!”

9. Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Give up on the gaudy gold numerals! Just as difficult to read are the team name and logo that go up the leg. The subdued royal cat, attempting to flee what appears to be the underworld’s conflagration, is nearly as difficult to spot. Although the blue and red combination looks good together, this is still the IPL’s worst-looking jersey. I could get into it if the advertisements were glossy gold with white numerals and a white logo. Instead, I must provide my sharpest critique of this.

Rating: “Set them on fire and never let it go.”

10. SunRisers Hyderabad

This isn’t anything I detest. Actually, the more I consider it, the more I kind of like it. Choosing white numerals for this orange and black combination was definitely a smart move. Contrast Matters, as we say on Sunday Morning Uni Watch during football season! Alright, up close, the jersey’s crazy orange and black design did make my blood pressure somewhat higher. Perhaps sleeveless black would be helpful. However, it creates a pretty nice pants stripe. And on those jeans, you can see another example of the advertisements for several players appearing on different thighs.

“I might wear that” is the rating.

As I indicated at the outset, I don’t anticipate receiving a lot of agreement on my scores. Simply said, I’m so tired with Nike and their preoccupation with Lighter/Faster/Cheaper that I’m happy to see teams that are trying harder to make sports worthwhile to watch. Yes, there are moments of success and failure. That is preferable than taking short cuts or attempting to get more teams to wear all-black or all-white attire. Variety is the flavor of life, and the Indian Premier League offers an abundance of it on a par with curry. If only we could take action regarding all those advertisements..
