Will TikTok be banned in America also? US Parliament expressed concern about Chinese app

The US Parliament passed a bill considering the current ownership structure of Chinese video app TikTok as a threat to the country’s security. The bill, passed by a vote of 352-65, will now be sent to the Senate. TikTok, an app used by 150 million Americans, is a subsidiary of Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd. The lawmakers argued that ByteDance is controlled by the Chinese government.

Lawmakers in the US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill considering the current ownership structure of Chinese video app TikTok as a threat to the country’s security. Under this, a nationwide ban will be imposed on the popular video app TikTok if the Chinese owner does not sell the property within six months.

Chinese government has control over ByteDance: US Congress

The bill, passed by a vote of 352-65, will now be sent to the Senate. TikTok, an app used by 150 million Americans, is a subsidiary of Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd. The lawmakers argued that ByteDance is controlled by the Chinese government. In such a situation, the Chinese government can demand access to the data of American TikTok users.

The bill will have to be passed by the Senate to become law

Congressman Cathy McMorris Rogers said that we have given TikTok the option to separate from the parent company ByteDance, controlled by the Communist Party of China (CCP), and conduct its operations in the US. However, the bill will have to be passed by the Senate to become law.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he would consult with the relevant committee regarding the bill. President Joe Biden has already said he will sign the bill if Congress passes it.
